How to read it. Filings identify: registrant (lobbying firm), client (paying entity), reporting period, income earned, specific lobbying issues (e.g. tax reform, defense appropriations), specific bills lobbied, and specific federal agencies contacted. Cross-reference client spending with the client's stock, sector exposure, and government contract awards.
Why it matters. US federal lobbying spend runs ~$4.3B annually. Sustained spending increases by a public company often precede regulatory outcomes (favorable rulings, subsidies, contract awards). Combined with Congress trades and gov-contract data, lobbying disclosures give a picture of which companies are actively working policy.
